Learning Analytics for Knowledge Building Discussion

Knowledge Building (KB) discourse consists of discussions that allow students to move beyond information sharing and towards students’ active development of deeper understanding and idea-building. As an important component of e-pedagogy, during this network session, teachers came together as a community to explore the use of learning analytics to support KB discourse. The teachers were introduced to learning analytics in the Knowledge Forum (KF), such as Curriculum-ideas Analytics (CiA), word cloud, activity dashboard, ideas building, lexical analysis, and scaffold growth tracker.

The teachers were further engaged in a lively discussion to understand how the visualisations generated using learning analytics can provide students with useful feedback for enhancing Knowledge Forum discourse. Two experienced KB teachers shared insights into how learning analytics such as the CiA and scaffold tracker were used to promote student thinking about ideas and helped them to deepen collective inquiry.
