Knowledge Building Summer Institute 2026, Nanjing, Yangzhou
RE-ENVISIONING EDUCATION THROUGH KNOWLEDGE BUILDING-AI INNOVATION

Knowledge Building, a seminal theory within the Learning Sciences, continues to reshape our understanding of learning and knowledge creation in the various iterations of the Knowledge Building Summer Institute. The annual event gathers researchers, practitioners and students to provide a platform of sharing and symmetric knowledge advancement by highlighting the importance of Learner Agency, Continual Idea Improvement, and Collective Cognitive Responsibility.
In the era of AI, Knowledge Building offers crucial theoretical and practical guidance for human-AI collaboration, pedagogical innovation and professional development. To bridge the theoretical insights with real-world practices, the 2026 Knowledge Building Summer Institute was held from March 24 to 27 in Nanjing and Yangzhou. This international conference was hosted by the School of Education Science at Nanjing Normal University, in partnership with Hanjiang Experimental Elementary School, an affiliate KB principle-based demonstration school.
The conference agenda was divided into two main parts. The Nanjing session was dedicated to academic research to highlight global breakthroughs in KB and AI integration. The Yangzhou session focused on practical progress in the advancement and applicability of knowledge building in schools. Hanjiang Experimental Elementary School shared its stories with international experts. The sessions were conducted in hybrid fashion to allow interaction with researchers and educators from around the world, who engaged in valuable exchange of insights and collaborated on new strategies for the modern classroom.
